I am very pleased that the ICOM and Northern College Diploma courses have featured three leading guest speakers as part of the Diploma programme.
Dr Yao Thum
Dr Thum is a Consultant at The Lister Fertility Clinic with a special interest in Reproductive Immunology, immunological basis of failed implantation, natural killer cells in reproduction.
He is actively involved in research in reproductive immunology, including natural killer cells, recurrent failed implantation after IVF treatment and recurrent miscarriage of immunological origins. He has also published widely on his research in reproductive immunology, women with elevated FSH and IVF treatment in conjunction with egg-sharing.
Dr Thum is clinical lead of the Ovum Donation team and is also on the advisory board of Womb Transplant UK.
Dr Thum discusses and explains the methodology, research and application of Reproductive Immunological treatments in unexplained fertility and recurrent miscarriage. This is an opportunity to ask questions and understand how we as TCM practitioners can work best for our patients in conjunction with Western medical practice.
Jaap Westerbos is a highly experienced Psychosexual, Relationships, Gestalt, Arts, Transpersonal and Relational CBT counsellor. His approach is Integrative, and his style is interactive. He is also an NCP accredited therapist, a COSRT accredited psychosexual and relationship therapist and a member of AHPP.
Jaap is a co-founder of NAOS, a training institute, which trains group facilitators, executive coaches, therapists and supervisors. He is also the author of two books: The Tao of Mashed Potatoes (1999) and World Wide We (2004).
Jaap discusses the ways we as Acupuncturists can best handle:
- Perceived failure – both in ourselves and our clients feelings about not conceiving
- Issues of identity
- Dealing with grief
- Sexual dysfunction as a result of infertility.
This is a chance to have an interactive discussion about how to hold our clients without being drained by them, and come away with tools to help us handle this challenging work.
Danielle King is a dedicated and passionate embryologist with many years experience in IVF. She works at Boston Place, which is one of the top private IVF clinics in London, run by Mr Stuart Lavery, the consultant who heads Hammersmith Hospital’s IVF unit. She works with state of the art laboratory equipment and unlike many embryologists, takes opportunities for regular patient interaction which allows her to have a personalised approach.
Talking with Danielle, we as acupuncturists will have an opportunity to ask about and understand from an Embryolgist point of view:
- How egg quality is assessed
- How this information is transmitted to clients
- The process of embryo examination
- The assessment of sperm
- What embryo glue, assisted hatching, Embryoscope time-lapse imaging and Spermslow are
- How PGD/PGS/CGH work, and their implications.
